Toyota Canada has announced a plan to build a new parts distribution centre for eastern Canada in Bowmanville, Ontario. The new facility will replace the company's current Toronto-based distribution.

Toyota says the new parts distribution centre will allow the company to optimize its manufacturing operations and make it easier for it to keep up with projected future sales increases. The Japanese manufacturer has a significant manufacturing presence in Canada, with cars and SUVs built at its plants in Woodstock and Cambridge, Ontario, accounting for about half of the vehicles it sells in Canada.

The build is expected to take about 18 months, with the facility set to open for business in the fall of 2019, around the same time as the company moves the production of its Corolla compact to Mexico to free up capacity for "higher value" vehicles.

Construction is set to begin early next year on a 30-acre piece of land at the corner of Baseline and Lambs Roads, a location that Toyota Canada President and CEO Larry Hutchinson said allows easy access to transportation routes like Highway 401, and will accommodate future growth.
