Ford imagines this compact SUV as being perfect for folks that enjoy the outdoors.

During an event in March, Ford detailed some of its product plans for around the next 24 months, and the automaker dropped some major surprises there. For example, there's a Mustang-inspired crossover on the way, and the Blue Oval is preparing a rugged compact SUV, too. The automaker doesn't yet have a name for the model, so the Motor1.com teams simply refers to it as the "Baby Bronco" since the model seems to be a tinier interpretation of the upcoming Bronco revival.

Ford provided practically no concrete details about the Baby Bronco at the event. The firm's brief description of the model was that it was “designed to win a growing number of people who love getting away and spending time outdoors with their families and friends.” The automaker also released a shadowy teaser image (see comparison above with the new rendering).

Powertrain details are a complete mystery. Given the model's off-roading focus, all-wheel drive seems like a certainty. The vehicle's compact size would make one of Ford's four-cylinder turbocharged engines plenty powerful for motivating the SUV. If the Blue Oval really wants to make this rig capable in the mud and dunes, then it would offer useful tech like locking differentials and a low-range transfer case, too.

Ford and Mahindra will develop an SUV and electric car together

Ford and Mahindra will develop an SUV and electric car together Ford has announced that it will co-develop an SUV with Mahindra, the Indian manufacturer of tractors, EVs, and most importantly for this story, trucks. The new SUV will use a Mahindra platform, and it's implied that Ford will do the heavy lifting on the rest of the vehicle. The two companies will also develop an electric vehicle, perhaps with input or branding with Mahindra's Pininfarina subsidiary. Sporty, stylish, and built cheaply from the Ford parts bin. Sound familiar? As the owner of this 1977 Bronco, David Kurtz, explains to Jay Leno, the Bronco was all about cheap, cool fun-just like the Mustang. And it was cheap for Ford to build. This truck borrowed liberally from the corporate parts bin, with lots of 4x4 equipment from the F100 pickup, and even the door handles from a 1965 Mustang. The engines were parts-bin, too-early Broncos got wheezy inline-sixes from the Falcon, while later, Ford's venerable 289 and 302 V8s found their way under that flat hood.
