Volkswagen teases new generation Jetta Teaser GIF at Volkswagen Canada consumer site shows various highlightsWe don’t know that we trust one or the other to be a better indication of the upcoming car, since they look a bit different (and even though you can’t see either one clearly enough, you can see similarities). The first image at vw.ca clicks through to a GIF, in which various parts of the all-new sedan are highlighted briefly. Choosing a proper screen shot and lightening it reveals a profile not unlike that of the current sedan, with a window line that is similar and larger headlights that almost appear a throwback to a previous generation.

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta debuted earlier this year with bigger proportions and a new set of transmissions. Now, the automaker has revealed fuel economy information for the compact sedan, and it's a noticeable improvement from last year's model.

The new Jetta produces 147 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque from a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. From this engine, the Jetta nets 30/40/34 mpg (7.8/5.9/6.9 L/100km) city/highway/combined when equipped with either the new eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual. Last year, the Jetta with the 1.4-liter engine netted 28/38/32 mpg (8.4/6.2/7.3 L/100km) with the six-speed automatic or 28/40/33 mpg (8.4/5.9/7.1 L/100km) with the five-speed manual. Although we haven't yet tested the new version, the previous Jetta was able to reach 60 mph from a standstill in 8.4 seconds with the 1.4-liter unit.

While certainly respectable, the Jetta's fuel economy numbers fall behind some competitors. The 2018 Honda Civic tops out at 32/42/36 mpg (7.3/5.6/6.5 L/100km) with its 1.5-liter turbo-four. Meanwhile, the 2018 Hyundai Elantra sedan nets an estimated 32/40/35 mpg (7.3/5.9/6.7 L/100km) from its 1.4-liter turbo powerplant.

American drivers are still concerned with fuel economy even as larger vehicles including crossovers permeate through the market. VW developed the new Jetta specifically with North America in mind, and it was revealed recently that there are no plans to offer it in Europe. Expect the new Jetta to arrive in North American dealerships sometime during the second quarter of this year.
