2018 Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid: Porsche Panamera Turbo S-Hybrid main© Jim Robinson Porsche Panamera Turbo S-Hybrid main Think hybrid and a cheerful little sedan that’s trying to save the planet probably comes to mind, not the 2018 Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid.

With a top speed of 310 km/h, getting to the promised land of a smog-free world means you’ll be do it at three times the Canadian legal speed limit — making it the fastest hybrid in the world.

But it also has a 0-100 km/h sprint time of just 3.4 seconds and up to 140 km/h in all-electric mode.

Its plug-in capability allows it to travel up to a claimed 50 km on electric power alone and it vaults from 0-60 km/h in 6.0 seconds, which is also pretty quick.

It's Amazing How Tiny Design Changes Can Have Huge Effects

It's Amazing How Tiny Design Changes Can Have Huge Effects Car design can be a surprisingly subtle undertaking. Little details can have effects far larger than you’d expect, and I think that’s what’s happening here. Early prototypes of the Giugiaro-designed Volkswagen Golf had headlights set in a slightly different location, and, at least to me, it looks and feels dramatically different. It’s astounding how much difference a few inches of positioning can make in auto design. Maybe I’m nuts, but when I see pictures of that 1970 VW Golf prototype—then called the Blizzard—I can’t help but think it has an incredibly doofy looking face. All of the same elements are there that would eventually be in the Mk.

Physics velocity/speed problem? You are to drive to an interview in another town, at a distance of 310 km on an expressway. The interview is at 11:15 A.M. You plan to drive at around 100 km / h , so you leave at 8:00 A.M. to allow some extra time.

All this is possible due to the breakthrough electromobility lessons learned from the 918 Spyder super sportscar.

It starts as a Panamera Turbo S, already a potent performer, and combines a 550 hp twin turbo 4.0-litre V8 with a 136 hp electric motor for a combined 680 hp and 626 lb/ft of torque.

Sending grip to all four wheels is an eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) dual clutch transmission in conjunction with the standard adaptive all-wheel drive system Porsche Traction Management (PTM).

At the tail is a liquid-cooled 14.1 kWh lithium-ion battery with charging that can be started via the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system or a Porsche Connect app (for smartphones and Apple Watch). Interestingly, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid is fitted with auxiliary air conditioning to cool or heat the passenger compartment even during charging.

Daydreaming While Driving Is Still Much More Dangerous Than Using Your Phone While Driving

Daydreaming While Driving Is Still Much More Dangerous Than Using Your Phone While Driving Doesn’t a lazy drive sound nice? Forget all your cares and watch the hills roll pleasantly around you, then above you, then around you again, then above you once more. As the car slides to a rest in the medium, take a moment to really appreciate your new perspective. Exhale! While there have been been chilling public service announcements, technological fixes and government inquiries into the rising tide of drivers who use their phones behind the wheel, no one is tackling some of the biggest killers on America’s roads—mindlessness, inattention and boredom.

What’s Interesting: At 310 km / h and a 0-100 km / h sprint time of 3.4 seconds it truly is the fastest hybrid in the world. On the European fuel consumption test cycle, it attained a 2.9L/100 km rating combined even with the added weight of standard full-time all-wheel- drive .

Drive Green with Europcar's tips! Drive within the speed limits: at 100 km / h you could be using up to 30 per cent more fuel than at 90 km / h . Remove unnecessary weight and roof racks: they increase the weight and air resistance hence increase your fuel consumption.

This is one of the great highway cruisers of our time and a perfect ride for my annual trip to the Fleetwood Country Cruize-In near London, ON, staged by Steve Plunkett and this year, as always, a magnet for thousands of wonderfully loved cars old and new.

The car is so smooth it’s best to travel on cruise, as it creeps up beyond the speed limit before you know it.

Being a Porsche, signature cues remain – sort of.

The dummy ignition tab is found to the left of the steering wheel. The classic Porsche five-pot main instrument cluster remains — with the large centre analog rev counter just where Dr. Porsche intended it to be.

But the two secondary gauges on each side are replaced by seven-inch screens that, to me, just aren’t the same, but are easier to read at a glance.

The imposing, and impressive, row of toggle switches running down the length of each side of the centre console is replaced by a black touchscreen that takes some getting used to.

The massive Porsche Ceramic Composite carbon fibre reinforced brake rotors at 420 mm front (10-piston calipers) and 410 cm (four-piston) rear were smooth in actuation with no “grab” feel.

These brakes with 21-inch alloy wheels are standard, as are front and rear heated seats and a 710-watt Bose sound system.

The standard three-chamber air suspension is much improved over the two-chamber system of previous Panameras.

It can lift the body 20 mm over uneven surfaces and can lower the front axel by 28 mm and the rear by 20 mm, making it closer to the ground at higher speeds for a lower centre of gravity and better aerodynamics.

This standout feature is what Porsche calls its 4D Chassis Control that is a networking system that collects data from all three dimensions (lateral, vertical, longitudinal) and feeds the information in real time to all chassis systems — creating a virtual fourth dimension.

Putting it as simply as possible, when entering a corner, the electronic dampers, adaptive air suspension, rear-wheel steering and the drive modes calculate and send out the optimal responses to each system for maximum stability and grip.

This Cute Little East German Truck Has A Higher Payload Rating Than A Ford F-250

This Cute Little East German Truck Has A Higher Payload Rating Than A Ford F-250 Ever since spotting a strange, single-passenger pickup with the engine on right side of its cab in Prague, I have been having dreams. Weird ones involving an America filled with the cute trucks it deserves, like the Multicar M22, which amazingly has a payload rating higher than that of a Ford F-250. “The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD Wants To Kill,” I wrote a few weeks back about the upcoming heavy duty offering from The General. Like most pickups for sale in the U.S. these days, the new Chevy is going to look angry. Which is a shame, because some of the best work trucks are the cute ones.© Provided by Univision Interactive Media, Inc.

Home Navigate to About The Green Car Driver . All in all, we drove 797 km (495 miles) and still had a possible range of 780 kilometres (484.6 miles) to go. The operating range was about 310 km (193 miles), but there were far more than 400 km to go!

Costa Mouzouris on the 2017 BMW G 310 R. Kevin Wing, Driving . In fact, the engine feels powerful enough to pull taller gearing — by about 65 km / h you’re in sixth, your toe often nudging the shifter for a non-existent seventh gear.

On the highway with the adaptive cruise and lane keeping assist on, the drive to and from the Fleetwood Cruize-In was effortless, to the point that I kept my hands on the wheel, but let the Panamera do the rest.

With the Drive Mode sent on Sport +, I unleashed the Panamera on a little undulating road I know out near Sarnia and pushed – within reason.

Lexus wows with new flagship, the LC 500/500h Coupe

As I found out a few weeks ago on a first drive of the 2019 Audi A6, the air suspension and rear-wheel steering provides a world of difference — making the Panamera (at a hefty 2,795 kg) feel like something much smaller in terms of response to driver inputs, especially steering.

As for fuel consumption, it runs on super premium and over more than 600 km, mostly at highway speed, I averaged 9.9L/100 km combined.

Porsche claims an all-electric range of 25-50 km, you can go a long way doing short errands and keeping the battery topped up. FYI, about 25 km is what you should expect in real world conditions.

I think we’re all agreed it’s time for everyone to embrace an automotive future where greenhouse emissions are a thing of the past and what better way to do it than in a Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid.

Google Minivan In 'Autonomous Mode' Involved In Crash In Arizona

Google Minivan In 'Autonomous Mode' Involved In Crash In Arizona A self-driving minivan belonging to Google’s self-driving car unit, Waymo, was involved in a crash in Chandler Arizona on Friday. The aftermath looks brutal. We don’t know a whole bunch about the conditions surrounding this crash, but we do know from a Chandler Police Department statement provided by spokesperson Seth Tyler that Waymo’s Chrysler Pacifica was in “autonomous mode” during the crash, and that it doesn’t appear to have been the primary cause the impact.“We are currently investigating a minor injury collision involving two vehicles, one of which is a Waymo autonomous vehicle,” the statement reads.
