These days the fashion world is much more relaxed about what colors to wear and when, but every year you will still hear people say that white after Labor Day is unacceptable, all thanks to some snobby millionaires who decided that was a fashion no-no more than 100 years ago.

Sure, there's a heat wave happening right now, but before you know it, you'll be packing away your sundresses and espadrilles to make room for chunky sweaters and over-the-knee boots. But do you need to ship your cream-colored skirts and ivory pants off to storage? Yes, we're referring to the age-old question, "Can I wear white after Labor Day?" The short answer: Yes! In fact, the story behind this arbitrary dress code is unconvincingly feeble.

The history: In the late 19th century-long before you could wear jeans to a Michelin-starred restaurant-the society ladies were engaged in an invisible battle with the nouveau riche, one that could only be won by the subtle manipulation of fashion.

40 comments on "Can You Wear White After Labor Day ?" This was a really hard rule for me to break…partly because I knew my mother would flip if she saw me wearing white after Labor Day .

The "you can't wear white after Labor Day," rule was created to separate the old money elitists from the new money group. "It [was] insiders trying to keep other people out," according to Valerie Steele, director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, in an interview with Time, "and outsiders trying to climb in by proving they know the rules."

For those who had money and could leave the city during warmer months, white was considered vacation attire. "If you look at any photograph of any city in America in the 1930s, you'll see people in dark clothes," Charlie Scheips, author of American Fashion, has said. " Meanwhile, white linen suits and Panama hats were considered the "look of leisure."

Some etiquette authorities like Judith Martin, rebuff this class theory, however, saying, "There are always people who want to attribute everything in etiquette to snobbery. There were many little rules that people did dream up in order to annoy those from whom they wished to disassociate themselves. But I do not believe this is one of them."

What Exactly is a White Strawberry?

What Exactly is a White Strawberry? I spend a lot of time on Youtube watching music videos, Tasty videos, and crash courses. One day, I came across a video titled Cultivating Japan’s Rare White Strawberry. Upon seeing the title, I knew I had to watch it. I really love strawberries and seeing a white strawberry made me want to learn more about this variety. Japan is known for having many unique types of fruits: santonishiki cherries, dekopon (a type of orange) ume, and even square watermelons. While these fruits are unique, the one fruit that gets everyone talking is the infamous white strawberry.

You Can (and Should) Wear White After Labor Day . Here are 12 pieces to buy now and wear for as long as you damn please. In the musty old days of strict fashion rules, wearing white was considered a post- Labor Day no-no.

And, for the love of God, you can — and should — wear white after Labor Day . Still skeptical? We've come up with over half a dozen ways to make white look good all year long, and in any fashion season.

The true reason could be much simpler: After Labor Day, the first Monday of September, became a federal holiday in 1894, it came to mark the end of summer. Vacationers packed away their breezy white dresses and linen button-downs in favor of darker-hued clothing, like navy suits and gray sweaters. "There used to be a much clearer sense of re-entry," explained Steele. "You're back in the city, back at school, back doing whatever you're doing in the fall-and so you have a new wardrobe."

Regardless of how this subjective rule really came about, no one in 2018 should feel the need to follow it. (I'm a fashion editor and I wear white year round, thankyouverymuch.) Style categories include winter whites and summer furs. Vetements even charges $1,090 for a bleach-white hoodie-that is now conveniently on sale-to further prove white clothing is seasonless.

Ahead, shop some white pieces to wear on or after Labor Day Weekend-you can do whatever you please.

This Power Ingredient Makes Any Sandwich Taste Like Summer .
Peak summer brings sunny beach days, endless Aperol spritzes, and easiest-of-the-easy dishes. I turn to simple recipes that require little in the way of time in the kitchen. This is less about shunning the oven, and more about the beauty of summer produce. When ripe tomatoes and fresh basil are so perfect on their own, why do much to change them? Topping my list of the best summer meals is the humble BLT. I go basic with mine: crisp bacon, lots of lettuce, drippingly ripe tomatoes, and a thick swipe of mayonnaise on lightly toasted grainy bread. Riffs on a BLT didn't usually entice me—until last summer. There's a secret sauce to blame for this, and that's basil mayonnaise. There’s a little general store in East Marion, New York called Fork & Anchor. Beachy and laid-back, it sports a royal blue awning and wide, worn plank floors. Their sandwich menu reads like a hungry beachgoers dream: herb-laden green goddess chicken salad, cheesy breakfast burritos, overstuffed turkey clubs with avocado, and so on. I like to ride my bike over for a cold seltzer, a chocolate chip cookie, and most importantly, their basil mayo BLT. The first bite was a bit of a revelation: why doesn’t everyone combine these two peak summer foods in one? Basil and tomato are great partners, as the caprese has taught us, and basil mayo elevates a BLT just enough without changing the fundamental flavors of the sandwich.
