Calgary mom Christa Cachene was stomped to death after stabbing her killer during an alcohol-fuelled fight, court heard Thursday.

Crown prosecutor Matt Block, reading from a statement of agreed facts, said Isaiah Rider killed Cachene, 26, in her northwest Calgary home following binge drinking by a group of adults.

Rider, 20, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in her death.

Block told Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Suzanne Bensler that Cachene was planning on moving to Vancouver and decided to have friends over to her house for drinks on Oct. 9, 2015.

She and a friend, Misty Eaglechild, took her two children to Cachene’s father’s home and then returned to her Ranchlands residence, where a few friends had already gathered, Block said.

Among those who stayed the night were Eaglechild, Cachene’s boyfriend, Joseph Contois, Christina Bull and the accused, court was told.

“On the morning of Oct. 10, the group went to nearby stores for food, coffee, and more alcohol,” Block said. “The group started drinking again early in the day.”

By the early morning hours of Oct. 11, only those five people remained in the home and Contois and Eaglechild passed out from drinking alcohol.

“After the two had passed out, Ms. Cachene and the accused were arguing in the kitchen,” the prosecutor said.

“The exchange was witnessed by Ms. Bull. She heard Ms. Cachene say that she wanted to die. Ms. Cachene had a small knife and she stabbed the accused in his lower back area and also cut the back of his hand with the knife.

“The fight then transitioned into the living room with both parties throwing punches,” Block said, of the 5-foot-1 and 110 pound Cachene and the 6-foot, 170 pound Rider.

“Ms. Cachene was knocked to the ground as a result of this altercation. Once Ms. Cachene was on the ground the accused began to stomp on her chest and head,” Block said.

“Ms. Bull went upstairs and went to sleep. When she was upstairs she could hear the accused continue to attack and yell at Ms. Cachene. The accused dumped Ms. Cachene’s body down the stairs that led to the basement.”

The following morning all the guests left unaware of Cachene’s condition.

That afternoon, her father, Leslie Whitehead, came to the residence to return her children and discovered his daughter.

“She was so badly beaten that he did not recognize his daughter,” the prosecutor said.

She died of multiple blunt force injuries.

At defence lawyer James Wyman’s request, Bensler ordered a report into Rider’s indigenous background.

He’ll face a sentencing hearing Oct. 16.
