Ten years after her death, a Calgary woman was able to give “evidence” Monday about how she was kidnapped, raped and robbed when she was abducted from her downtown workplace.

Reading from the woman’s statement, given to police shortly after her March 28, 1995, attack, Crown prosecutor Samina Dhalla was able to detail the complainant’s horrific ordeal.

The woman, then 51, told police she was working alone at a sandwich preparation shop off Macleod Tr. around 5 a.m. that day.

“I heard someone banging on the back door,” she said in her statement.

The man yelled: “City police, we are looking for a fugitive.”

But when the woman, who can’t be named, opened the door, she was greeted by a stranger wielding strips of aluminum. The man forced his way into the shop and began slapping her face saying “where’s the money.”

She told them there wasn’t any as the shop didn’t have public sales.

“Then he told me to get on the floor with my face on the floor in the bathroom,” she said.

The assailant went through her purse, but all he found were two loonies, a U.S. dollar bill and some quarters.

“He said ‘we’re going for a ride,'” the woman told police.

The woman was then blindfolded, marched to her van outside and put in the back area.

“He got into the front and drove away,” she said.

The attacker then drove at a high rate of speed, before coming to a stop at a remote area on the outskirts of the city.

“He came to the back where I was,” she said. “He said ‘I’m going to make love to you,’ I said, ‘Please don’t, I am an old woman.'”

He then told her to remove her clothes and raped her.

“He told me to say, ‘Oh Raphael, Oh Raphael, Oh Raphael,'” she said.

After the sexual assault he told her to put her clothing back on and then ordered her out of her van, before driving away.

The woman was able to wave down a pair of passersby who took her home.

Charged with sexual assault with a weapon, robbery and kidnapping is Wayne Howard Bernard. Bernard, 55, was arrested two years ago.

Co-prosecutor Pam McCluskey, in her opening address to jurors, said Bernard was charged after DNA testing linked him to the crime. McCluskey told jurors the day the incident occurred should have been a joyous one for the woman.

“March 28, 1995, should have been a very happy day, but it wasn’t because something horrible happened to (her),” she told jurors.

In fact, in her statement the woman said she received a phone call after being taken home from her son-in-law in Mission B.C. telling her her granddaughter had been born at 5:10 a.m. while she was being abducted from work.

Meanwhile, jurors also heard from two of the women’s daughter who were at the home that morning. Both struggled to hold back tears as they testified about how shaken their mom was as she spoke to police.

Bernard’s trial is scheduled for two weeks.
