  Residents evacuated as Calgary Fire battles high rise blaze Residents of a high rise in southwest Calgary were evacuated Saturday after reports of a balcony fire in the building. The Calgary Fire Department responded to reports of a fire on the 8000 block of Horton Rd. SW at about 9:30 p.m. Crews were met with visible flame and smoke coming from a balcony on the ninth floor of a multi-story residential building. Fire crews evacuated residents in proximity to the floor it was one, while battling the blaze in the suite. Evacuated residents were sheltered in buses provided by Calgary Transit. According to a release, installed sprinklers in the building minimized the damage inside the suite. Investigators are still determining the cause and origin of the fire, while monitoring air quality in the building. There were no reported injuries.

A Calgary man accused of killing an acupuncturist he believed was having an affair with his wife made his first court appearance Monday. Jin Qing Huang, 42, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Dr. Tiejun Huang at the Perpetual Wellness Chinese Centre in northwest Calgary last Thursday.

A 27-year-old man has been charged in connection with a stabbing Monday morning at a homeless shelter in downtown Calgary.

Police were called to the Drop-In Centre just after 11 a.m. for reports of a stabbing inside the entrance of the shelter.

Police say they believe the suspect pepper sprayed the victim during the attack and fled the north towards the Bow River.

About 15 minutes after the attack, police arrested Cordelius Terru Jackson Harrison in the 700 block of McDougall Court N.E. Police say the suspect requested medical attention as it's believed he was suffering from the side effects of the pepper spray. 

The victim, a man in his 20s, was rushed to hospital in serious condition, but his condition was later upgraded to stable.

Harrison has been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, unlawfully causing bodily harm, causing a disturbance and three counts of failure to comply with conditions of recognizance. 

The motive of the attack has not been determined.
