At least two Canadians are stranded on the island of St. Maarten in the path of Hurricane Irma, and friends say they haven’t received any direction on how to evacuate.

Michael Moriarty and his wife, Meryl, travelled to St. Maarten from Ajax on Sunday for a vacation.

When Hurricane Irma struck on Wednesday, the couple said they were “stuck” with “no food (and) no water,” according to an email they sent to friends.

“Desperate for (evacuation), need as much help as possible,” the email reads. “Please get all friends to call Canadian consulate they are our only hope of rescue.”

Jill Davis received the email Thursday. “They sounded very desperate,” she said.

Davis was in contact with the couple before the storm, agreeing to check on Meryl’s elderly mother during their vacation. Over the past couple days, Davis received numerous texts from the Moriartys about how frightening the storm had become.

A panicked email sent to friends pleaded for assistance to contact the Canadian consulate on their behalf, Davis said. Later Thursday, Davis lost contact with the couple.

An email to Davis from the from Global Affairs Canada’s Emergency Watch and Response Centre, advises those affected to contact their travel agent, and follow instructions from local authorities.

But this could be challenging, due to downed communication lines.

A flight to New York that was scheduled to evacuate the couple from the island was cancelled Thursday, with no additional rebooking information provided.

Hurricane Irma made landfall Wednesday, battering Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
