Quebec’s Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes is investigating after police shot a machete-wielding man in Lévis early Sunday morning.

According to early information gathered by the bureau, the Lévis police service received a call around 3:20 a.m. about a 27-year-old man who seemed to be in distress.

On arrival, police noticed the man was carrying a machete. Officers asked the man to drop it, the BEI said, but he advanced toward them instead, threatening to use the weapon. The man was shot at least once and brought to a local hospital. Police do not fear for his life.

The BEI sent eight investigators to the scene. The agency, established in June of 2016, conducts independent investigations when a person is killed, suffers serious injuries or is shot by an officer during an intervention or while in police custody.
