John Anthony Clark Nabben, who was employed by the Greater Essex County District School Board, is said to be guilty of professional misconduct by the college’s investigation committee and will face a hearing on the accusations in front of the college’s discipline committee.

The college has alleged Nabben abused students “physically, sexually, verbally, psychologically or emotionally,” in a 12-page summary that says the teacher failed to maintain the standards of the profession.

The public school board fired Nabben on June 7.

Nabben was said to have belittled students or made inappropriate comments that included telling one female drama student she was not being “sexual enough” and to make her performance “more orgasmic” during her monologue, according to the college.

Some of the allegations dated back to 2008 and included telling one female student she was not allowed to be in any shows if she dated her boyfriend because he “would ruin her acting ability.”

He was accused by another female student of playing with her hair and touching her leg during rehearsals. Then later telling her he was done with her and slamming a door in her face.

Nabben also is accused of using profanity when telling another student she was the reason her group scene was terrible.

He also was said to have frequently used profanity and at times racist jokes, telling students in 2014-15 that “I don’t like Asians,” according to the allegations.

Nabben also frequently asked students about their personal lives or relationships, allowed students to use his vehicle during class time and attempted to turn students against other students “who disappointed him,” the college says.

He also stands accused of telling students inappropriate or false information about himself, “such as having cancer, getting his leg amputated, or leaving the school, to elicit emotions prior to performances.”

Nabben is being represented by Toronto lawyer Kirsty Niglas Collins. She did not immediately provide a comment after being contacted.

The college has not yet published a hearing date, said spokesman Brian Jamieson.

He could not guess what discipline will be pursued by the college, saying it was a matter that the committee hearing will determine.

“It’s going to a public hearing, the allegations have been posted,” he said. “It’s not for me to interpret or guess what will come out of the process.

“Members are entitled fair, timely and open hearing. This is a matter to be decided by the discipline committee.”

A spokesman for the public school board would not comment Monday on the allegations against Nabben.
