During a confession that a Saskatoon police investigator called “probably the most bizarre and incredible thing I’ve heard,” Tyler William Robert Hurd said he did not regret killing the woman who took him in when he was homeless.

In an hours-long video played Tuesday and Wednesday, Hurd detailed to police how, why and when he decided to kill 55-year-old Cynthia Crampton in June 2016. Her body was found face-down in her bathroom, covered in blood-soaked towels, according to forensic evidence entered at Saskatoon Court of Queen’s Bench, where Hurd is on trial for first-degree murder.

He didn’t want the murder to be drawn out, but “I wouldn’t change it if I could. I regret nothing in my life,” Hurd said to police.

“As premeditated and sick as it is what I’ve done, I do not feel bad, but for your sake I feel horrible because Cindy was somebody’s daughter and somebody’s mother.”

Crampton, a mother of two, died on June 1, 2016 in her rented suite on Galloway Road in Saskatoon’s Stonebridge neighbourhood. One of her daughters found her body two days later. Hurd was arrested on June 5, 2016 a few kilometres outside Saskatoon.

During his confession, Hurd talked with police about his background — he had been in a psychiatric ward nine times — and asked if he would serve his sentence in jail or a psych ward. He also said he was on 14 different medications for bipolar disorder, suicide attempts and insomnia.

Hurd described killing Crampton as the first violent thing he’d ever done. When Sampson asked what led to that behaviour, Hurd said the barriers in his life — wife, children, work — that would have kept him from such actions had fallen away and he was tired of being stepped on his whole life. In sections of the video played in court on Tuesday, Hurd said his wife died and he lost his job in 2010. He was a welder in Calgary and said he had never touched drugs until he lost everything, including his children.

In a section of the video played Wednesday, the officer asked Hurd what his children were going to think about all this. Hurd said he didn’t want to think about his kids finding out he’s a murderer.

At one point during Hurd’s confession, Sampson told Hurd it “was probably the most bizarre and incredible thing I’ve heard.”

“Thank you,” Hurd replied.
