A Shelburne, Ont. firefighter has arrived in Trinidad and Tobago to support his mother after his father was killed while vacationing there.

“Our whole department is deeply saddened,” Shelburne Fire Chief Brad Lemaich posted on Twitter Sunday night.

Media reports from Trinidad indicate the man was found dead in the streets of Ste. Madeleine Friday morning. The Trinidad Express reported that police said the Canadian man’s body bore marks of violence.

“Global Affairs Canada sends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the Canadian killed in Trinidad and Tobago,” Global Affairs Canada spokesperson Brittany Venhola-Fletcher‎ told The Banner.

“Consular services are being provided to the family of the Canadian citizen who has died,” she added. “Due to the provisions of the Privacy Act, further details cannot be disclosed at this time.‎”

Lemaich has been in contact with the firefighter since he left. A funeral is scheduled to be held on Wednesday.
