Snow had been falling throughout the evening when Charlie took his dog for a walk along his usual route in Bowness on Christmas Eve.

He passed the familiar shuttered businesses near Bowness Road and 79th Street N.W. and stopped at the edge of a parking lot to search through a bank of garbage and recycling bins, looking for stray bottles.

But inside one of the bins, Charlie saw something that froze him in his tracks.

“I thought it was a doll at first,” he said. He looked closer and suddenly felt afraid.

“I dropped that lid, ran back and phoned the police.”

Postmedia has agreed not to reveal Charlie’s full name, and some details of what he discovered inside the bin have been withheld at the request of homicide detectives.

Police received the call around 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 24 that the body of a baby girl had been found in Bowness.

Early findings suggest the newborn may have been alive when she was left at the scene sometime between 3 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve, police say.

An autopsy was conducted last week on the baby, described as having a light complexion and dark hair, but investigators say further testing will be required to determine exactly what caused her death.

Calgary police are still searching for the baby’s mother, revealing to reporters in the days following the disturbing discovery that evidence at the scene suggested that the mother may be in medical distress.

“I think it’s tragic for everyone involved,” Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta said last week. “The gravity of the situation certainly has a toll on the people investigating as well as the person who discovered the baby.”

Charlie, who works as a security guard and keeps an eye on some of the businesses near where the baby was left, said he no longer feels good when making his rounds in the evenings.

“I don’t look in them bins anymore. I just don’t want to see that kind of stuff again, ever,” he said.

“It scared me pretty good, I’ll tell you that. It still bothers me. It’s so sad, that somebody could do that, carry a baby for nine months — there’s so many places that you could take that baby and put it where it would be warm.”

Charlie said he plans to attend a candlelight vigil that’s been organized for the infant, who’s been dubbed ‘Baby Jane.’

The vigil was initially scheduled for Saturday, but organizers decided to postpone for a few days until temperatures warmed up. The event is now planned for Wednesday at 7 p.m., near the Community Recycling Depot on 43rd Avenue N.W.

“Her life needs to be honoured and her mom needs to get the help that she needs,” event organizer Dayna Bramston told Postmedia last week.
