The major spring storm that's made it look a lot more like winter from the U.S. Midwest, to Ontario, to Quebec continues its march east into Atlantic Canada with the threat for dangerous travel in areas that see prolonged periods of freezing rain.

The good news for easterners is that the system is entering a phase where the powerful low pressure centre and the bulk of the moisture are separating, meaning that while those nearer to the Great Lakes were blasted by blizzards and ice storms, by the time the storm reaches Atlantic Canada it will have lost some of its punch. That doesn't mean it'll be a lightweight, however, as we watch for significant snow, ice pellets, freezing rain, and rain to sweep across the region early this week. We take a look at the details residents of the eastern provinces need to know, below.

Real estate sales have tumbled in the Windsor and Essex County area in recent months, but not due to lack of buyer interest. The scarcity of available listings is to blame — especially in the under $250,000 price range, where first-time home buyers are finding almost nothing to choose from.

TUESDAY - SLOW MOVING ICE AND HEAVY RAIN

With the core of the low pressure lagging back over southern Quebec and blocking high pressure ahead over the the northern Atlantic, precipitation will be rather slow to move through the Maritimes, meaning an unpleasant day ahead for many on Tuesday. Freezing rain - potentially heavy at times - looks set to continue for the northern half of New Brunswick and western P.E.I., while heavy rain - and even a few thunderstorms - swing into Nova Scotia. While the good news is drier air is right behind this heavier blast of precipitation (that accompanies the cold front), the bad news is it looks like Tuesday will be a wash-out - or an ice-out - for most of the Maritimes.

Rain and freezing rain are expected to taper off into the evening hours, lasting longest for eastern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton.

Overnight Tuesday into Wednesday is also when the system will make its debut in Newfoundland, with the potential for a prolonged period of freezing rain likely for most the island. Special weather statements have already been issued and it's likely that we'll see some freezing rain warnings pop up as the event draws closer. This will be one to watch for Newfoundland residents as we head toward Wednesday.

WEDNESDAY AND BEYOND - ROUND TWO? WRAP-AROUND EFFECT + NEW SYSTEM

The low pressure centre finally makes its way into Atlantic Canada on Wednesday, and that means that, while a prolonged drier period is likely for the Maritimes sometime late Tuesday/Tuesday night, you're not out of the woods quite yet. A lot will depend on the precise timing and track of the low as we head through midweek, but at the moment forecasters are watching for another round of snow, and possibly freezing rain, to move through overnight Wednesday into Thursday.

Even further out than that, in the further long range for the end of the week, a new system looks to clip the region with yet another blast of snow and rain; more on that as it draws closer.
