One man is dead following a collision between a motorcycle and a truck at the intersection of Park Street and 9th Avenue late Saturday afternoon.

The investigation is ongoing, according to police. Staff Sergeant Dean Yadlowski addressed reports that the collision followed police action by noting that, based on the current state of the investigation, there was “no pursuit.”

But he said police were in the same area as the motorcycle driver — by the McDonald’s on the service road near the corner of Park Street and Victoria Avenue — shortly before the collision.

“There was a police presence,” he said. “Police were in the area. Whether or not that contributed to the behaviour of the motorcycle driver is being investigated.”

One witness said he saw police trying to pull over what he believes was the same motorcycle near that McDonald’s shortly before he came across the fatal collision.

“It’s just sad to see,” said the witness, Frank Summerton who was driving home from a funeral at the time of the crash.

“I thought the guy was just going to get a ticket.”

Yadlowski said police also got reports of a previous collision that may have involved the same motorcycle, though that is not confirmed absolutely and police were not at the scene of that incident.

He said the exact sequence that led to the man’s death is still being investigated, but acknowledged that one possible scenario is a chain of events that began with the first collision, proceeded to the McDonald’s and ended with the fatal crash.

Adal Hussain, a customer service representative at the Husky Gas Station on the corner of 9th and Park, was working when the crash happened.

“I heard a big boom,” said Hussain. “I turned around, there was a guy laying on the ground and then I called 9-1-1.”

He said people at the station ran toward the man to try and help, but police were already on the scene.

“It was just chaos over here,” he said. “It was a scary scene.”

Darrel Holgren, an auto body technician from the South Sask Customs auto repair shop located on the corner across from the Husky, also heard the crash.

“It was just a huge crunch,” said Holgren. “I stared at the kid just hoping his stomach would start moving.”

Holgren said he saw the driver of the truck taken away from the scene of the crash by EMS.

Members of patrol, Forensic Identification and collision analysts from the Traffic Safety Unit were investigating at the scene in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner.

Judge tosses evidence from collision investigator in fatal cyclist crash .
In a major blow to the Crown's case, a judge has tossed out most evidence from an Ottawa police collision investigator who testified that the driver of the large truck that struck and killed Nusrat Jahan would have clearly seen the cyclist before he turned right. It comes after Det.-Const. Alain Boucher's re-enactment of the crash — recorded two months after it happened and played in court earlier in the trial — was revealed to contain several major errors.
