OTTAWA—Bruce Heyman, the U . S . ambassador to Canada , has formally tendered his resignation , sent packing by an incoming Trump administration that is moving fast to clear out political appointments made by outgoing U . S . President Barack Obama.

But Trump has taken a different tact, ordering all politically appointed ambassadors put in place by outgoing U.S. President Barack Obama to be out of their posts by inauguration day, the New York Times has reported.

Heyman was confirmed as Obama’s representative to Canada in March, 2014. The long-time executive at Goldman Sachs had been an Obama loyalist and fundraiser.

In a pre-election interview with the Star, Heyman struck an optimistic tone about the future of Canada-U.S. relations, saying that the close relationship would endure, no matter who moves into the White House.

Heyman said that ties between the two nations were broad enough and deep enough to withstand whatever result the election would serve up.

But Trump’s surprise win — and his campaign stances questioning immigration and free trade — undoubtedly now present big challenges for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Liberal government, which has enjoyed close ties with Washington during Obama’s tenure.
