Survivor: Jeff Probst sizes up the final five

Survivor: Jeff Probst sizes up the final five Each week, Jeff Probst will answer a few questions about the latest episode of Survivor: Heroes v. Healers v. Hustlers. ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Ben was shocked that nobody went to follow him as he left to go look for an idol, which he then found. Should the other five players have had someone constantly following Ben everywhere or is that too impractical because there might be times — say where someone goes off for an interview or to the bathroom — that are impossible to monitor? What’s your take on babysitting folks looking for an idol? JEFF PROBST: You would think by season 35 there would be some kind of Survivor Manual with guidelines for every situation. But there are so many factors that come into play in each situation that it’s just not that clear. The easy criticism is to say “You idiots! You deserve it!” But having been in those jungles, I can attest to the fact that finding an idol is not nearly as easy it often appears to be on the show. Sometimes you get lucky and find it fast, but usually, you are searching for hours and most times come away with nothing. So I do think that was part of the thinking… “He’s not gonna find another one.” And I also think groupthink plays a part because nobody wants to be the babysitter. It’s exhausting and so often your time would be spent following someone who doesn’t end up finding anything. So if someone in the group suggests letting him go, others are easily swayed.

One single vote. One piece of parchment with one name written on it. That is all that it takes in Survivor for one person’s game to end and one person to be saved.

Ben Driebergen didn’t just dodge a bullet last night. He dodged a railway gun size artillery shell that would have obliterated any chance he had at becoming the Sole Survivor and taking home that check for a million dollars. Every single castaway left in the game voted for him to leave. It was the Hidden Immunity Idol he had kept secret and his one vote for Lauren that kept him in the game.

You can cheer him or you can boo him but Ben’s play was absolutely outstanding. In contrast, Lauren was responsible for detonating her own game. Not only did she leave her extra vote power back at camp but she gave half of her Hidden Immunity Idol to Mike who then promptly threw it into the firepit at Tribal Council. Lauren had the power to rescue herself but she made some unfortunate decisions.

Survivor: Jeff Probst on that bonkers Tribal Council

Survivor: Jeff Probst on that bonkers Tribal Council ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: A lot of emotional reunions here at the loved ones challenge. Was there one in particular that hit you the hardest out there? JEFF PROBST: Ah, man, that’s a tough question because each of them needed the love so much and I connected with every one of them in a different way. The loved ones moment in the show has really changed for me over the years. I really focus on the reaction of the players. From the moment they sense their loved ones are on the island their entire demeanor changes. Even the toughest of players begins to let their guard down. In the early days I wasn’t always able to access my empathy for what players were going through, maybe because I was dealing with my own stuff just trying to make the show. But I have come to truly respect anybody who takes this game on because of the enormous toll it takes to weather the emotional highs and lows. So choosing my favorite moment would be like choosing a favorite kid. I always enjoy this episode because the players have earned it and they really cherish it. For the first time you had the players and loved ones each picking marbles out of a bag, and they had to match colors to stay in the game to win a reward. Take us through the decision to have them do this and was it intentional to make it a contest of blind luck as opposed to skill? This originated from a simple problem of too much story and not enough time in the episode. We only have 43 minutes in a one-hour episode.

Returning to Ben, if he can somehow regain his lost allies and turn the entire game around it will be perhaps the biggest comeback ever mounted on Survivor. No matter how things go though next week’s episode is bound to have drama, drama and more drama.

Survivor: Jeff Probst explains why he looks down at his feet

Survivor: Jeff Probst explains why he looks down at his feet Each week, Jeff Probst will answer a few questions about the latest episode of Survivor: Heroes v. Healers v. Hustlers. ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: I thought Devon’s plan of having Ben act as a double agent and pretend to be in the dark on the JP vote to gain intel from the other side was pretty brilliant. I clearly underestimated Devon’s strategic chops in this game. What did you see from Devon in casting and has his gameplay surprised you as well? JEFF PROBST: The initial take on Devon in casting was divided. We were all in agreement that he was one of the nicest people we’d ever met as you could tell that he had been raised well. But the question mark was would he come alive on the beach or would he play the game more laid back? I was definitely on the fence. What ultimately sold us on him was the belief that people would root for him if for no other reason than his likability. So as his game awareness became more apparent we were all super stoked. Turns out he can appear laid back but still push the game forward. He’s a Survivor version of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. If you underestimate him based on his manners, he will swallow you whole. Now he has put himself in a really strong position and at a very good time in the game. As a player you have to remind yourself all day, every day — there will be only one winner. We don’t share the title or the money. So everybody is your enemy. By design.

Week 11: Game Fail – Lauren Rimmer

I cannot even begin to puzzle out why Lauren made the moves she did. Up until now she had been so careful and so measured about her schemes and strategy. When she needed her special powers the most she discards them and leaves them back at camp? You just cannot make mistakes like that in the final phase of the game.

Strategic Gameplay

Lauren was like a Black Shark torpedo. She was silent but deadly. It was great to see her evolve into a power player over the course of the series and make one of the biggest moves of Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers by breaking up the Round Table Alliance. She was very precise when it came to her strategic moves. It was stunning to see her fumble the ball she had carried so very well for 33 days.

Social Gameplay

Lauren was very adaptive. She could relate to anyone at any time. People came to her for advice which is why she probably gained the trust that she did from others. She knew how to communicate well and be diplomatic.

Bronze Amateur: Chrissy Hofbeck

She is playing with her heart and not her head. That could lead to her downfall.

Silver Amateur: Ben Driebergen

Just like Chrissy he is letting his emotions run away with his game.

Gold Amateur: Lauren Rimmer

She burned down her own game by making two big mistakes.

Bronze MVP: Ashley Nolan

Ashley is a serious competition threat and that could keep her in the game. She had better up her strategic game if she wants to have a well-rounded resume though.

Silver MVP: Mike Zahalsky

Interesting move to throw half of the Hidden Immunity Idol into the fire but Mike being the odd man out is sure getting a lot of attention. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is taken or dragged to the end at this point.

Gold MVP: Ben Driebergen

He played everyone perfectly. The question is can he come back from this and salvage his game?
