Jozy Altidore scored his seventh goal of the season, substitute Jordan Hamilton added a late header and Toronto FC regained the Eastern Conference lead with a 2-0 home victory over D.C. United on Saturday night.

Sebastian Giovinco provided his second and third assists of the season for Toronto (9-5-2), which rebounded from a rare loss in its last match after having gone unbeaten in eight before that.

The victory helped the Reds remain one point ahead of the second-place Chicago Fire and five up on third-place New York City FC, who both won earlier on Saturday.

Bill Hamid made five saves for last-place D.C. United (4-3-8), which has failed to score a non-penalty-kick goal in its last 665 minutes of league play, a stretch of more than seven full matches.

D.C. United, which trailed 21-8 in shots and 7-1 in shots on goal, is now 1-5-1 in its last seven.

Altidore put Toronto in the 60th minute after a D.C. United turnover in midfield.

Giovinco got possession and drifted toward the right touchline, then sent a ball to Altidore lurking behind defender Steve Birnbaum. Altidore used a deft first touch to get behind Birnbaum and then drove a powerful low finish beyond goalkeeper Bill Hamid from just inside the penalty area.

Toronto moved ahead 2-0 in the 85th minute off a corner kick. With Giovinco taking the kick from the left, Hamilton made a darting run to the near post. He reached the ball ahead of Birnbaum and sent a glancing header just inside the far post.

Toronto dominated the first half but had few clear-cut chances. Altidore had arguably the best when he was first to the rebound of Giovinco's shot, but directed a diving header just wide of the near post.

United's best chance before halftime came on a late counterattack, when Patrick Nyarko's cross from the left went inches beyond sliding forward Lamar Neagle.

The Reds had a similar chance to Neagle's early in the second half when Steven Beitashour's cross skidded just beyond Justin Morrow.

Toronto began to show more signs of frustration, especially after some thought D.C. defender Kofi Opare had handled the ball inside the penalty in the 54th minute. But tensions eased after Altidore's opener, and even more after Hamilton's second.

Reds have their eyes on MLS prizes .
Toronto FC officially hit the halfway mark of the regular season on Friday night, with a gutsy 2-0 win over the New England Revolution, one of only two teams to beat the Reds this year. It was TFC’s 10th win of the season, and kept the team unbeaten at home this season. It also gave the Reds a four-point cushion atop both the Eastern Conference and the race for Major League Soccer’s Supporters’ Shield. At this pace, the Reds should certainly be in contention for a number of end-of-season awards.
