After a 30-minute delay on Sunday morning, the National Hockey League released the expansion draft protected lists. The Vegas Golden Knights are on the clock now, with a little more than three days to make their selections and to make deals with the other 30 teams.

It is likely that some teams already have deals in place with Vegas general manager George McPhee as they seek to offer assets like draft picks to retain players who didn’t fit inside the protect list rules (either seven forwards, three defencemen and one goalie, or eight skaters and one goalie).

Thirty NHL teams have a few more hours to agonize over the list of players they want to protect from the Vegas Golden Knights expansion draft . Some teams may already have deals in place with Vegas general manager George McPhee

Which players are most likely to be protected in the NHL expansion draft by Canada 's seven teams ? The expansion draft process begins Saturday when teams submit their draft protection lists , with the names released to the public the following day.

Below are the protection lists of the seven Canadian teams, which look a lot like the lists readers selected in voting last week.

Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks had limited spots available at forward because they have three forwards they must protect due to no-trade clauses — Daniel and Henrik Sedin and Loui Eriksson. The hardest choices came on defence, where the Canucks have four defencemen worth keeping but only three spots. They elected to go with Erik Gudbranson over Luca Sbisa.

Forwards: Daniel Sedin (NTC), Henrik Sedin (NTC), Loui Eriksson (NTC), Bo Horvat, Sven Baertschi, Markus Granlund and Brandon Sutter

Defence: Alex Edler, Chris Tanev, Erik Gudbranson

Goaltender: Jacob Markstrom

Calgary Flames

The Flames put their goaltending worries behind them by trading for the Coyotes’ Mike Smith on Saturday.

Oilers have no surprises on their expansion protected list

Oilers have no surprises on their expansion protected list Oilers have no surprises on their expansion protected listThe Oilers have been listening to trade offers on Eberle, likely for a  cheaper forward because they need some money to resign centre Leon Drasiaitl, their best playoff performer, but as expected they had the 26-year-old Eberle protected along with six other forwards–Draisaitl, Milan Lucic, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Patrick Maroon, Zack Kassian and Mark Letestu. Lucic has a no-move clause and players with that clause have to be protected as a matter of course although even if Lucic didn’t he’s their first-line left-winger.

Now that Las Vegas' NHL expansion franchise has its name, management will begin to narrow their focus on the expansion draft in June. With these in mind, here's an early look at who each Canadian team may look to protect and who will be left exposed.

The NHL will hold its expansion draft early next week, with the 30 existing teams submitting protected lists and the Golden Knights choosing from among the rest to construct their first roster. The protection lists must be submitted by Saturday at 5 p.m. ET

Winnipeg Jets

The Jets, it was announced Saturday, were able to get defenceman Tobias Enstrom to waive his no-trade clause for the purpose of exposing him to the draft. That allowed the Jets to keep defenceman Tyler Myers and not have to use the eight-skaters option. That meant three extra forwards could be protected, spots that went to Adam Lowry, Joel Armia and Andrew Copp.

Forward: Mark Scheifele, Blake Wheeler, Bryan Little, Mathieu Perreault, Adam Lowry, Joel Armia, Andrew Copp

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Leafs have so many young forwards who didn’t have to be protected because they have less than three years of service time that they could afford to protect Matt Martin and expose marginal young prospects like Brendan Leipsic, Kerby Rychel and Seth Griffith.

Forwards: Nazem Kadri, James van Riemsdyk, Tyler Bozak, Leo Komarov, Connor Brown, Josh Leivo, Matt Martin

Defence: Morgan Rielly, Jake Gardiner, Connor Carrick

Goaltender: Frederik Andersen

Ottawa Senators

It came out Saturday that the Senators had made the choice to protect defenceman Cody Ceci over Marc Methot, but hoped to be able to retain Methot. The club had tried to avoid the choice by asking Dion Phaneuf to waive his no-trade clause so that he could be exposed, but he declined. Ryan Dzingel earned a protected spot over Bobby Ryan.

Forwards: Mark Stone, Kyle Turris, Mike Hoffman, Derick Brassard, Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Zack Smith, Ryan Dzingel

Vegas Golden Knights ‘really pleased’ with players available to them

Vegas Golden Knights ‘really pleased’ with players available to them Vegas Golden Knights general manager George McPhee spoke to reporters on Sunday where he said he was “really happy” with the amount of unprotected talent available to his team ahead of the NHL Expansion Draft. The NHL released each team’s protection lists on Sunday, revealing to all the talent the expansion franchise will be able to select, flip, or hold hostage for futures, as it gets set to make its selections on Wednesday.

Goalie Anthony Stolarz and center Scott Laughton were the two biggest surprises among the 11 players the Flyers protected in the expansion draft . The NHL released the protection lists Sunday. Stolarz, 23, was protected over veteran goalie Michal Neuvirth

The 1967 NHL Expansion Draft was held on June 6, 1967, in the ballroom of the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, Quebec, Canada . The draft took place to fill the rosters of the league 's six expansion teams for the 1967–68 season: the California Seals, Los Angeles Kings

Montreal Canadiens

The Canadiens made two pre-list moves in the last three days, acquiring potential star forward Jonathan Drouin from Tampa Bay for defenceman Mikhail Sergachev, who is still just 18 years old. Drouin’s arrival meant one fewer spot was open at forward, which likely caused Alexander Radulov to be exposed. Radulov will be a free agent on July 1, so there’s probably some hope they can re-sign him.

Montreal also sent defenceman Nathan Beaulieu to Buffalo for a third-round pick, easing the decision on defence and allowing the Canadiens to protect Jordie Benn.

Forwards: Max Pacioretty, Brendan Gallagher, Paul Byron, Phillip Danault, Alex Galchenyuk, Andrew Shaw, Jonathan Drouin

Defence: Jeff Petry (NTC), Shea Weber, Jordie Benn

Goaltender: Carey Price (NTC)

The 3 biggest surprises from Vegas' expansion draft .
With many of Vegas' expansion-draft selections being leaked by reporters hours before the announcement, there weren't a ton of surprises among the roster picks. However, with an abundance of side deals, three storylines in particular shocked the hockey world. Pittsburgh forcing Vegas to take Fleury Marc-Andre Fleury is coming off one of the worst seasons of his career, but he is still without a doubt a top-30 goaltender. Despite this, Pittsburgh had to offer Vegas a second-round draft pick just so it would take on his contract, which has two years remaining at $5.75 million per season.
