Morosi: Blue Jays should look at Garcia, Holland as rental arms With the MLB trade deadline six weeks away, it’s time for teams on the fringe to reevaluate their 2017 plans and decide if they are looking to buy or sell and the Blue Jays are likely to go with the former. “If the Jays can find a way to get a good rental arm, they should do it,” Morosi said on Sportsnet 590 The FAN. “I think that’s the one part about the club, especially with the uncertainty of Aaron Sanchez’s blister and his health, you add the pitcher if you can.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the San Francisco Giants only rely upon home runs for 28.3 percent of all their runs. The league average this season for offense generated by home runs is 42.4 percent.

The Blue Jays employ an “all or nothing” approach, which leads to home runs in bunches, but the club often experiences offensive dry spells. Despite their uncanny ability to hit for power, it hasn’t proven to be a sustainable winning formula for Toronto this season; it has yet to reach the .500 mark through 68 games.

Although the Yankees are baseball’s current home run kings, they’re a little less “feast or famine” than their division rivals in Toronto. The Yankees and Athletics sit second and third on the list as both clubs have cashed in a little more than half of their runs thanks to the long ball.

Is counting on being bailed out by a home run a sound strategy? Probably not over the course of a 162-game season. Even if it’s a lineup littered with double-digit home run hitters, those batters are prone to cold stretches sooner or later. The 33-35 Blue Jays are living proof of that, as is the fact that four of the top five teams on the list are at or below .500.

If a team like the Blue Jays leans heavily upon home runs, it can’t just about-face and transform into a gap-to-gap team overnight. As Russell Martin told reporters recently, “It’s kind of our DNA; we’re built that way.”
