Lowry chalks up early struggles to Raptors' new offense

Lowry chalks up early struggles to Raptors' new offense The Toronto Raptors hinted all summer that changes were coming to the offense after the team finished dead last in assists - and they've turned out to be big changes for star point guard Kyle Lowry. Alterations to the Raptors' attack have boosted their assist and passing totals dramatically from previous seasons. Meanwhile, however, Lowry's scoring has plummeted from 22.4 points per game to 11.9.He chalked up his struggles to his unfamiliarity with the new offense, which has limited his touches."I think the way we're moving the ball, the ball's not in my hands as much," Lowry explained to TSN's Josh Lewenberg on Monday.

Jonas Valanciunas had 21 points — including just the second three-point shot of his NBA career — and 10 rebounds, but the Raptors were forced to fend off the Bulls ' feisty fourth-quarter comeback Raptors guard Kyle Lowry waits for a high five from a teammate and checks himself for any damage.

Lowry 's tenacious playing style has often earned him comparisons to a pit bull or bulldog, with many citing his toughness, leadership and instinct for winning plays on the court.[1][77][78] Lowry 's Villanova teammate Curtis Sumpter ^ " Kyle Lowry scores 41 as Raptors hold off Lakers, 123-114".

The drives and finishes at the basket in the first quarter were vintage Kyle Lowry in a couple of tone-setting early moments. The silky smooth three-pointer late in the second quarter were part of a dominant, game-busting run.

There were issues with Lowry and his play with Raptors going into Tuesday night but the veteran point guard answered the criticism with arguably his best game of the year.

Still searching for an absolute comfort zone in the team’s tweaked offensive philosophy, Lowry took matters into his own hands with a 17-point, six-assist night in a harder-than-it should-have-been 119-114 victory over the Chicago Bulls at the Air Canada Centre.

Kyle Lowry struggling with Raptors’ new approach

Kyle Lowry struggling with Raptors’ new approach It has been a slow process and a frustrating one for Kyle Lowry as he tries to figure out just what the Raptors need from him and how he can provide it, a transition that hasn’t gone nearly as well as the team’s point guard would like. He has not had one of those Lowry games where he takes over and goes off for 30-something points or a dozen or so assists, dominating the play and doing things that have made him a three time all-star.Instead, he is kind of muddling along, figuring things out on the fly, fully expecting it to come together at some point, even if that point hasn’t presented itself in the first nine games of the regular season.

Joel Embiid had 34 points and 11 rebounds and Philadelphia held off the cold- shooting Toronto Raptors 117-111 on Monday. DeRozan scored 24 points and Kyle Lowry struggled in his return from a three-game absence because of a bruised tailbone.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kyle Lowry relishes any chance to raise his offensive game in the fourth quarter. The Toronto Raptors needed just about every one of his big baskets to hold off the Los Angeles Lakers.

He didn’t dominate the offence, nor did he take away from the ball- and player-movement style the team is implementing. He simply found his opportunities and seized them in the flow of the game.

It added up to a much-needed win for a group that had been listless in two of its three previous games. Lowry and the starting unit had been inconsistent at best.

“It’s what, nine games in now I believe?” Lowry had said before the game. “It’s still early. I haven’t found a rhythm yet and I think our team hasn’t really found a rhythm yet. We’re still inconsistent.”

They did deliver one of their more thorough performances, which has to ease their collective minds, hanging on after a 23-point lead shrunk to three in the fourth quarter and stretching their record to 6-4.

With the Raptors on-court ‘culture change’ on display for ten games so far this season, take a look behind the numbers to learn what is— and isn’t— working at the moment.Following Tuesday night’s alarmingly close 119-114 win over the hapless Chicago Bulls, the Raptors find themselves with a 6-4 record— not outstanding, but respectable.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kyle Lowry scored 20 of his season-high 41 points in the fourth quarter, and the Toronto Raptors held on to stop a two-game skid with a 123-114 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night.

Kyle Lowry and the Toronto Raptors got buckets then. They get buckets now. Nothing has changed. Between seasons his focus was finding new, equally efficient ways to generate shots for himself, ones that involved his teammates as more than just screeners and floor spacers.

After seeing a 23-point lead shrink to five with less than a minute to go, the Raptors needed a basket by DeMar DeRozan with 20 seconds ago to gain some breathing room on the 2-7 Bulls, who got 21 points from Bobby Portis.

The starters, who coach Dwane Casey had criticized for their collective effort on the weekend, got Toronto off to quick start and then buried the Bulls in the second quarter.

The backup unit had staked Toronto to an eight-point lead when DerRozan, Serge Ibaka and Jonas Valanciunas joined Lowry and Norm Powell for the last 4:30 of the first half.

The starters rattled off a lighting quick 16-4 run to take a 20-point lead at halftime.

It was the first quarter that was the most pleasing. The Raptors played with a sense of urgency and effort they haven’t consistently shown.

Casey said it was about being ready to “go and not waiting until you get punched in the mouth to start competing and getting a lather going and that type of thing. Again, it’s a phenomenon. You can make numbers say whatever you want them to say but it’s all about coming out and competing in the first quarter.”

But as much as Casey got a big game out of most of his starting unit — DeRozan had 24 points, Valanciunas had 21 and Ibaka 16 — he also continued to milk the team’s depth as much as he could.

It’s probably not sustainable for the long term since there really aren’t enough minutes to go around and keep everyone in the flow of the game but Casey used 12 of his available players before the game was 14 minutes old and used seven subs over the course of the second half as well.

Having strength in numbers may sound good, but not knowing which four or five of the seven will be best each night can be frustrating.

“That’s always a challenge because you don’t know until you put them out there,” Casey said. “But I do know the young guys like OG (Anunoby are) going to make mistakes, but we live with some of his mistakes. As long as they are competing and playing hard you got to, because that’s the only way they are going to grow.”
