Under Benning, however, the Canucks have restocked their prospect pool with elite talent. Last month, TSN analyst Craig Button featured five Vancouver prospects on his annual Top 50 NHL-affiliated prospects list, including top-ranked Elias Pettersson,  a 19-year-old Swedish centre who the Canucks drafted fifth overall in 2017.

Joining Pettersson on Button’s top-50 list were Finnish defenceman Olli Juolevi (No. 24),  U.S. college centre Adam Gaudette (No. 26), Swedish winger Jonathan Dahlen (No. 31) and U.S.-born netminder Thatcher Demko (No. 42).

“It’s been a trying season in Vancouver, but there’s reason to believe better days are ahead,” Button wrote.

“Just like many of you, I’m excited about the group of prospects in our pipeline including Elias Pettersson, Olli Juolevi, Thatcher Demko, Adam Gaudette, Kole Lind, Jonathan Dahlen and others who are among many young players taking big steps,” Linden wrote.
