  Djokovic discusses lack of confidence after French Open win PARIS - Despite all of Novak Djokovic's success over the years — the 12 major championships, the career Grand Slam, the time ranked No. 1 — he still finds himself searching for self-confidence these days. That's what an elbow injury and forced absence from the ATP tour can do to a player. Djokovic was reflective and revealing Wednesday after moving into the third round at the French Open by virtue of a self-described up-and-down performance in a 7-6 (1), 6-4, 6-4 victory over 155th-ranked Jaume Antoni Munar Clar of Spain. Simona Halep has fought through to win her first Grand Slam trophy, beating American Sloane Stephens 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the French Open women's final Saturday.

After so much disappointment in Grand Slams, Halep's wait is over. The 26-year-old Romanian collects her first major championship in her 32nd appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam. 

Stephens took control early in the match that was punctuated by long rallies and high-level tennis. But Halep came back to win nine consecutive points in the second set to take a 4-2 lead and went on to force a third set.

Halep, ranked No. 1 in the world, was 0-3 in her previous Grand Slam finals. Prior to Saturday, she lost to Maria Sharapova in 2014 and Jelena Ostapenko in 2017 in the final at Roland Garros. The Romanian also fell to Caroline Wozniacki at the Australian Open final this year. 

She becomes the second Romanian woman to win a Grand Slam, joining Virginia Ruzici who triumphed at Roland Garros in 1978.

Stephens, ranked No. 10, is the 2017 U.S. Open champion. She entered Saturday's match with a perfect 6-0 record in Tour level finals. She beat American Madison Keys, a close friend, in straight sets in the semifinals in Paris. Stephens will climb to No. 4 in the rankings, an amazing feat considering she was No. 957 10 months ago.
